Project Background
A pneumatic conveying system handling highly abrasive bulk materials experienced accelerated wear in several pipeline elbows. Although the straight ceramic-lined pipes remained in good condition, maintenance inspections showed that elbow sections required frequent replacement, leading to increased maintenance costs and unplanned downtime.
Challenge
The customer initially considered upgrading to harder ceramic materials. However, engineering analysis indicated that the primary issue was not ceramic hardness but the severe particle impact and turbulence generated at the elbow sections.
Solution
Elacera recommended an optimized ceramic lining configuration based on the operating conditions.
Straight pipe sections utilized continuous ceramic ring linings to provide stable wear protection and smooth material flow.
For elbow sections, custom-shaped alumina ceramic tiles were selected to closely match the changing geometry. Special attention was given to the transition between different lining structures to reduce turbulence and eliminate localized wear concentration.
The lining design was customized according to conveying velocity, particle characteristics, and pipeline configuration.
